Whether you're visiting for a week or thinking about staying longer, these seven tips will save you time, money, and stress.
1. Download Grab before you land. Indonesia's version of Uber is ubiquitous, cheap, and has GPS — meaning no negotiating with taxi drivers who'll quote you 5x the real price.
2. Get a local SIM card at the airport. Telkomsel has the best coverage. For about $10 you'll get a month of data. Don't rely on hotel wifi for anything important.
3. Bring USD cash. The ATMs work, but having USD gives you options and the exchange rate is often better at money changers. Use PT Dirgahayu — the most reputable chain.
4. Learn to negotiate for motorbike rentals, but not for food. Negotiating food prices is rude. Everything else is fair game.
5. Keep a sarong in your bag at all times. Many temples require them. Locals sell them at the entrance but the prices are high and the quality is low.
6. Don't touch offerings. The small flower and incense arrangements on the ground are religious offerings, not decorations. Step around them.
7. Say yes to things that scare you slightly. The cooking class you weren't sure about. The sunrise hike up a volcano. The local ceremony you stumbled upon. Bali rewards the slightly adventurous.
